4 February 2024 Newsletter

Welcome to the newsletter for February.

It’s time to harvest Cabbages, Cauliflower, Sprouts and Kale, along with Leeks, Celeriac, Parsnips and Swedes for winter stews.

Sow seeds indoors to raise seedlings for planting out in the spring. Few seeds germinate outside now.

Plant shallots and garlic.

Chit potatoes.

Dig over your plot and add plenty of well rotted organic matter. Reminder…a whole barrow of manure is £1! Bargain!

Cover seedbeds with cardboard or polythene to help warm up the soil.

Force rhubarb and chicory but covering with an upturned bucket.

A reminder….
Please make sure all belongings are removed from the polytunnel by February 10th so it can be ready for disinfecting.

Our next working party dates are

Saturday 24th February

Saturday 23rd March

Saturday 20th April

All are at 9 am to 11 am with Coffee/Tea and homemade cakes provided.  We have lots of jobs that need doing around the site so as many hands on deck as possible would be wonderful. A really good turnout to these early season working parties would mean we can get the site in good order before the Spring growth overtakes us.

Thanks for reading.
