Tasks for October include:
- Harvesting remaining summer veg before the first frosts. Lift potatoes and beetroot.
- Cut pumpkins and squashes. Leave them to cure in the sun so their skins harden and flesh ripens.
- Cover autumn salads and oriental leaves with cloches or fleece if there’s a danger of night frosts.
- Sow broad beans.
- Plant garlic, onions, rhubarb and any bare rooted fruits bushes like currants and gooseberries.
- Take down supports for climbing beans, peas, and tomatoes.
- Clear away dead plant material and compost it.
Thanks to all who came/helped/donated etc at the Harvest Festival! Despite variable weather we managed to to raise just under £500 which will help to buy equipment to maintain the plots.
A little reminder, please feel free to cut yourself some flowers from the bed near the shed and help yourself to herbs from the boat.
After the success of Sue’s bacon butties, would anyone else like to volunteer to provide snacks after the next working party?!
The next working party is 19th October 9 to 11am and the one after is 16th November, same times! Hope to see you there.
